Description:

Leigh developed Elementary Literature for CHC to give hesitant readers a place to grow and thrive. At its conception in 2022, Leigh began with Drawn Into the Heart of Reading as a base, where students are encouraged to become better readers through instruction and activities which help them successfully comprehend and analyze each literary work. The goals of the Drawn Into the Heart of Reading program include making connections within text and creating purpose for reading, developing higher-order thinking skills, analyzing key elements that make a story
work, literature discussions, vocabulary, character studies, and an appreciation for an array of literary styles. Leigh also pulls from The Good and the Beautiful and Not Consumed curriculums when developing lessons. While reading is the focus,
students are encouraged to bring characters to life through drama, art, and social studies projects.

Book examples:
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder,
Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brin
The Railway Children by E. Nesbit, A Little
Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

**Repeating students always explore new books each year.

**Students may utilize tools such as abridged versions of texts or audio books if needed.

“It is my goal to instill an absolute love for reading exceptional literary works of
art at each student’s individual pace.” -Leigh
As an optional benchmark, students are invited to participate in the spring production which involves all of Leigh's students.

Instructor:

Kristi Lee

Contact Info:

Cost:

Books Needed:

$250/semester -this includes fees for handouts

No book purchase necessary. Class handouts are included in the fee.

* In order to get the most out of this class, a keyboard for home practice is highly recommended!

Description:

This class provides a fun hands-on introduction to the fundamental aspects of music-making. Focus will be on rhythm (with lots of bucket-drumming activities), music reading and improvising (through keyboard playing), and listening skills (through a study of the orchestra). We will also learn to sing solfege and other fun songs.

First semester is geared towards those who have had little or no music lesson experience. Students will learn basic rhythm skills and pattern playing, explore keyboard geography and learn a few pre-reading piano songs as well as basic music notation, signs, and symbols. Utilizing classics such as Peter and the Wolf, Carnival of the Animals, and Benjamin Britten’s Guide to the Orchestra, students will have fun learning how to distinguish different instruments and sounds. Students will also be introduced to solfege singing.

Second semester will build on the foundations of first semester and is geared towards those who have had some lesson experience or who have completed first semester. Students will continue developing both rhythm and listening skills through ensemble bucket-drumming. Piano playing and music reading skills will be developed through Level 1 pieces, fun improvisation patterns, pentascales, and chords, with an introduction to lead sheets. We will also practice 2-part singing.

To Be Announced

Description:

Leigh developed Jump Into Learning I in 2017 with hopes that young children would find a place to explore learning concepts, Biblical foundations, and cultivate new friendships in a safe setting. She has been overjoyed to see the
program grow over the years and has learned as much as the children! In this course, children learn reading and writing concepts through Bible lessons, history, social studies, and science combined with art, music, and dance! The children begin with letter “A” and progress through the alphabet as a guide. Think “A is for Abraham” and “A is for Astronauts and Space!” / “B is for Beatitudes and B is for Butterfly life cycle”, etc. All lessons have a strong emphasis on reading
and writing skills at each child’s individual progression, while engaging students in thinking about the Lord and His amazing design of our world. For children repeating Jump In I, new material is introduced with concepts that will gently
encourage growth at each child’s individual readiness. In addition to class time, supplemental learning projects and assignments are given for students to progress at their own pace during the week.
*As an optional benchmark, students are invited to participate in the spring production which involves all of Leigh’s students.

Description:

After teaching Jump Into Learning I for 2 years, Leigh decided to grow with her students and developed Jump Into Learning II in 2019. Students in the 2nd through 4th grade years should never be rushed in the learning process. Rather, they should be encouraged to discover, explore, and reach milestones in their education with joy and at their own pace. Transitions should always be handled delicately, so Jump Into Learning II is a blend of continuing with fundamental reading and writing skills, while exploring history, science, social studies, art, and
music. Leigh enjoys using the Five in a Row curriculum as a base for Jump In II.
Five in a Row is an easy-to-follow, highly effective instructional guide for teaching a variety of concepts using outstanding children’s literature as the basis for unit studies. Leigh has used this curriculum with her own children and loves the
emphasis on fostering a lifelong love of literature. She also is deeply committed to helping her students see Biblical concepts in each unit study. So far, Jump In II students have progressed through 4 Volumes of Five in a Row! Students
repeating Jump In II read new books and explore new units, so repeating is always encouraged. In addition to class work, supplemental learning projects and assignments are given for students to progress at their own pace during the week.
*As an optional benchmark, students are invited to participate in the spring production which involves all of Leigh’s students.
